Breakfast in the Park
Three ducks upended in the quiet pond,
skittering squirrel crossing the wet road,
chir-chirring bird beneath hibiscus bush,
the gecko scrambling around my steps.
Morning activity all around,
bent on one purpose, quickly to be seen,
bills raised to swallow tasty bites,
beaks snatching bugs among the grass.
Rocks around my steps hide moving snacks,
I must say would not appeal to me,
but geckos leaping, sliding, capture them,
unanimous, their aim is satisfied.
Still to come, anhinga, neck like snake,
will slither on the water, raise to dry.
All that effort to get nourishment,
reminds me, it's breakfast time for me.
